Liberty Nickels 1883 - 1913

This change in composition led to the introduction of a new design, featuring the head of Lady Liberty, symbolizing the liberty of the United States. The Liberty Nickel replaced the shield nickel design and quickly gained popularity among collectors.  Charles E. Barber, the chief engraver of the United States Mint, was responsible for the design of the new nickel coin. The nickels minted in 1883, known as the "No Cents" nickels, did not feature the word "cents" on the reverse. This omission created an opportunity for counterfeiters to produce fake coins. It wasn't until the following year that the word "cents" was added, preventing further counterfeiting.
